In a residential treatment program, the patient will stay in the facility 24 hours a day, and he or she will have access to healthcare professionals during that time. A residential treatment program typically lasts somewhere between 30 and 90 days, though there are some programs that are shorter or longer.

In a partial hospitalization program (PHP), the patient will be in the facility for 6 to 8 hours during the day, and he or she will be permitted to go home in the evenings, assuming he or she has access to a safe and stable environment.

In an outpatient treatment program, the patient will be at the facility for 10 to 20 hours during the week. This may be every day in the mornings or 2 to 3 days for a longer period, but patients in this program are still able to work.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a well-known program for those with a history of alcohol misuse. The program uses a 12-step program that walks you through all the steps of recovery. Narcotics Anonymous is a program for people with a history of narcotics misuse. It uses a 12-step program with a spiritual component. NA understands that your sobriety journey is a lifelong journey and gives you the support you need for as long as you need it. The meetings are always free. NA meetings can range from speaker meetings to a discussion meeting during which the group discusses a specific topic. The meetings provide you with accountability as well as ongoing education about substance misuse.

SMART Recovery provides a scientific approach to recovery. The program aims to empower members with self-sufficiency. Rather than a 12-step program, members learn the four principles of SMART Recovery.
