SMART Recovery, founded in 1994, is a self-help group that relies on cognitive-behavioral techniques, as well as motivational therapy, to achieve sobriety without invoking a higher power. SMART stands for Self-Management Recovery and Training. Those in groups are encouraged to think about what they get out of drugs or alcohol, and then consider what they are giving up to keep using. Then, they learn ways to maintain sobriety (if that is what they choose). Research has shown that for the right people, SMART can be as effective as AA or NA in helping recovering users achieve and maintain sobriety.
